You Know Something….And Someone Will Pay You Handsomely For That

It’s very easy to be overwhelmed when getting into the information business. There is just so much of it out there. Everyone seems to be saying “get your own product, that’s where the money is”. But how can you, as a newcomer to internet marketing create your own product? What can you offer that is new? My point is that absolutely everyone, including YOU, has information or knowledge or experience of something inside their heads that other people will pay a lot of money for.

You, I, and everyone else can all market ourselves as an authority on something. Maybe it’s a hobby, maybe you have learnt something through your job, it may be something you learned long ago in your childhood, it could even be about how you were able to overcome an especially negative experience in your past.

With good reason every internet “guru” tells us to create our own product. From time to time I can come across as a little “anti guru” but they are bang on the money about this. Every single person has specific knowledge that is of financial value to others. There is ALWAYS a new angle you can use on an existing theme. Even if you’re truly not capable of writing your own eBook about your subject, because you don’t see yourself as a writer, however there is nothing stopping you outsourcing to a writer for less than $200.

I tried many different things online from blogging to affiliate marketing to eBay and several other things in between. Because I didn’t have a “techie” background and I was a newbie to internet marketing I didn’t think I had knowledge that somebody else would want to buy from me. Then one day it struck me – the principles that had led to my running a successful offline business are pretty much identical to the general principles for successfully selling online.

Let me just give you a quick example – around 3 years ago the latest buzz word on the internet was “viral marketing”. The “gurus” were lining up to proclaim this as some great discovery; the latest Holy Grail. Strangely enough I had been using “viral marketing” to build up my own offline business back in 1985 – long before internet marketing and the internet as we know it even existed!

The only thing was I didn’t think to call it that, or even give it any sort of name, it was just one of my marketing strategies. So don’t get overwhelmed by all the “marketing speak”, it’s almost certainly all been done before.

Still struggling to come up with ideas as to how you can make yourself “the expert”? Get a pen and paper and write down the answers to these questions:

  • What do I enjoy doing?
  • What hobbies do I have?
  • What qualifications do I have?
  • If I won the lottery tomorrow how would I spend my time?
  • What do I HATE doing? (yes, you can turn that into a product!)
  • Name 5 successes I’ve had (doesn’t have to be business related, could be hobby or family)
  • Name 5 failures I’ve had (learn from your mistakes)
  • Name a new internet marketing skill you’ve learned (even if you haven’t made money, maybe you now know how to set up a blog, create a header, whatever. MOST people don’t know how to do that and will pay YOU for that information, even if your blog hasn’t made any money!)

Hopefully that’s given you a few ideas. Go on – get brain storming!

  1. True words… we all have knowledge of a particular area or discipline that others have not.

It’s just a case of overcoming the inertia and doing something about it.

  2. Overcoming inertia – that’s one of the biggest problems we all have. I’m going to make that the subject of a future post, thanks for the idea.
